A few Sabbaths ago, I had the privilege of sitting in on one of our student Sabbath School groups. I wish you could have been there. You would have been blessed as I was.
This was the first small group Sabbath School of the year. Our group of ten, meeting in the Bible room, had chosen to study the topic “How to Know God’s Will For Your Life” using the inVerse Bible Study Guides. This week’s leader, an enthusiastic sophomore, skillfully led a group discussion that kept us carefully investigating and talking through the relevant Bible passages. We discussed questions such as “What is the difference between a partially obedient, dilatorily obedient (we had to look up the word), and disobedient heart?”, “Why doesn’t God reveal His will to an unwilling heart?”, “How does one know his or her own willingness?”, and “How does one maintain a wholehearted devotional life daily?” The discussion was interesting and often very practical. Several students said that they “really, really liked” the study and were excited for the next Sabbath School study time.
The group I observed is one of six similar groups. Each group is studying a topic or Bible book of their choice. The group meeting in the Women’s Dorm chapel is going through the classic “It Is Written” Bible study guides. Another group meets in the lobby of the Women’s Dorm to study the book of I Corinthians. The group meeting in the Men’s Dorm chapel is also studying the “It Is Written” Bible study guides. The group in the Men’s Dorm chapel studies the book of Revelation. A fifth group in the basement of the Men’s Dorm is going through the “Amazing Facts” Bible Study Guides. And, of course, the group in the Bible Room studies the “inVerse” lesson. A different student leads each week.
It is our prayer that through these Sabbath School groups, students will come into direct contact with Jesus through His Word and be transformed. “The Sabbath school is an important branch of the missionary work, not only because it gives to young and old a knowledge of God’s word, but because it awakens in them a love for its sacred truths, and a desire to study them for themselves; above all, it teaches them to regulate their lives by its holy teachings” – CSW 10
